Some Things Leave Me Speechless

Benjamin:  "Mom, you should come out here and see this."
"Oh, and bring the camera."

The above is what I was called to see.
Do you see anything at all odd about this picture?

Sunday Afternoon Fun

This afternoon we were all able to go play miniature golf.  Helena and James were on the same team.  They are best buddies :)

The ladies were all on the same team.  The scores weren't too bad, but the goal was only to "beat James" who wasn't paying attention half the time :)

For the most part, I don't think I really need to comment on this one…

Let's just say I was glad the guys were ready and willing to help retrieve my ball from the water trap.  How embarrassing!!

Happy Birthday, Benjamin!!!

So….Benjamin picked out a new recipe for a cake
with a frosting Emily had never made before.
Suffice it to say, it didn't turn out quite as well as she
had hoped :}

Even Benjamin thought it was funny…

…and got pretty worn out trying to blow out his candles...

…and blow them out again and again :)

Of course, the new shirt helped ...

…with photo bombing provided by James :)
Happy 14th birthday, Benjamin!
We love you!!!

The Hummers Have Arrived

I wasn't sure if my new hummingbird feeder would
be accepted by our ruby throats since there is
hardly any red on it.

Apparently, I needn't have worried.  This one found
it in less than a day :)
It's so fun to have them back.
Happy Sunday!

First Long Solo Cross-Country

Matthew had his first long cross-country flight this week.  His first stop was at the Marquette airport where he had to do a few take-offs and landings.  On arrival, he was in a landing pattern with the army helicopter you see at the right.  The helicopter got to land first :)  (His plane is the little one to the right of the fuel truck.)   He also got to wait for the army guys to leave.  Apparently Army trumps Piper :)

Bye bye Army and on to Escanaba :)

It was a beautiful day to fly!
After his stop in Escanaba, it was
time to head home.

It was a beautiful landing and a great relief to the mom :)

I'll call your attention to the fact that we now have
real leaves on the trees!!!

This is still such a fun sight to see...

…he parked the plane for fueling, hopped out and….

…registered his flight.
He is now at the half-way point in his training.
Exciting times ;)

Final Lab of the Year

Christopher got to complete his final biology lab this week.
This meant, of course, that he had to cut up some of my
Mother's Day flowers :(
Doesn't he look studious :)

Spring Recital

This year's spring recital was likely the last that will be able to fit in our music room.  It was very cozy in there, but it worked.  Both Helena and James played their instruments well, but it always cracks me up to see them so serious when they are performing :)  Benjamin, Helena and James also did well on their piano pieces and are learning to memorize well.  That was a huge effort!

The final piece of the day was a studio group piece that Emily and Kristin arranged for their students.  It was a fantasy on "Hot Cross Buns" and incorporated all students ranging in age from four to age fourteen.  They loved this piece and had fun learning to put it together during group classes.  Everyone was so patient with the little four year old who would sometimes have frequent "troubles" ;)

Our First Spring Rescue

This poor little bird decided to fly directly
into our family room window.  Kristin
rescued it from becoming a certain
snack for some creature.  It developed
quite a liking for her and didn't want to
leave her.  Kristin finally transferred it to
Helena since she had to leave
for work.  I couldn't get a picture of that
since "Mom's taxi service" was needed :)

Signs of Spring!

Now, I really like spring anywhere, but it seems
just a little more special in the U.P.   When you
make it to April and the bulbs start emerging and
then even blooming, it's just such a relief!

Helena and James were even able to break out the
kite and enjoy flying it on a cloudy afternoon. You'll
notice the absence of snow!!!

These brave little crocuses were so pretty
 by our front door!

James was able to help clean up in the garage.  There is always
so much sand and salt that accumulates throughout the winter and
a spring day is the perfect time to get it all swept up :)

Christopher got the ultimate fun task:}
He got to remove the snow thrower attachment from the tractor
and get it all ready for next winter.  Then it was
time to learn how to put on the mower deck and get
all the fittings greased.

First, Dad showed him how to do one;
then Christopher got to do the rest.
What fun!
(and what a mess I might add)
Just a tip:  Put cardboard under equipment before using the grease gun:)

Mission accomplished and we're all ready to mow.
