Conversation with James

Conversations with James can be interesting to say the least.
Here is a peek at a recent one we all got to hear at the breakfast table:

James:  "Crocodiles are very opportunistic."

Bob:  "Opportunistic, huh, James.  What does opportunistic mean?"

James:  "It means when they see an opportunity to eat, they take it."

I think we all had a good laugh over this one.  First of all because he
just blurted this out in the middle of an unrelated conversation, and secondly
because he actually knew what it meant.

Future Carpenter?

With six boys in the house, we have to have certain
rules about breakage.  This time it involved a certain
trundle bed.

The back rail was completely split and the mattress
was sagging even with just the weight of little James.

So, it was repair time.
Both the back rail and a couple of the drawers needed

Bob took care of the drawers.

Benjamin got to be the one to make a new rail for
the bed with Bob.
(Christopher decided to photo bomb)

Learning to cut with a hand saw and not cut
the work table or his hand

He got a little extra training in keeping
the saw (and therefore the cut) straight.

Bob clamped a new support piece on the bed and Benjamin got to screw it on.

I think the best part of this whole process was seeing Benjamin actually enjoy working on the project with his dad.  All the other guys either have learned or are in the process of learning carpentry from their dad, but he is the first one to actually enjoy it.

Attaching the new rail meant Benjamin had to make sure the screws went in nice and straight.  This isn't too easy when his elbow had to be almost level with the top of his head :)

Time to put the mattress slats back on

Um…I think this might be a problem

Okay, time to screw them back on

Last one and...

Job finished!
Good job Benjamin!

An Exercise in Patience

I walked by the music room door last week
and saw this amusing scene...

…Kristin was graciously spending some free
time playing Battleship with James.

Now, there's an exercise in patience!

Winter Sunset

It's interesting how the temperatures and weather change the appearance
of our sunsets.

We had two brilliant sunny days this week which gave us
some beautiful pictures.  The most exciting part here is that it was
almost 6:00 P.M. and still light out.
We're moving in the right direction!

A Squirrel Tale

This little guy popped his head out of the snow
this morning.

What do you suppose he was looking for?

Oh, what a disappointment!
All that tunneling and ...

… the bird feeder was empty!

It's Always Something…Part 3

We had all but one screen repaired in the house
this past summer.  So, finding out that this little
shrew had chewed through the screen in the basement
was not a happy thing.

Andrew removed the little critter who had apparently
frozen in the window.

It's been quite cold with the exception of yesterday,
so that wasn't a surprise.
The poor little thing was pretty cute--destructive though.
It chewed a total of four holes in the screen :(

It's Always Something….Part 2

We've been working on trying to figure out where
the source of our smoke-filled basement is whenever
we use our main floor fireplace.

Our chimney sweep was unable to find the cause,
so Bob went looking.

He pulled out our old non-operational propane insert...

…and cleaned out the firebox to get a closer look.

Finding a bunch of rust and disintegrating metal was
rather disappointing though not completely unexpected.

We ended up finding multiple places where the basement
firebox is compromised so it will be quite a project to get
it fixed.
It's always something :~{

It's Always Something…Part 1

It's been a while since I've posted.  Sometimes it
feels like we're not doing anything worth posting,
but I guess life is always happening :)

At the beginning of the month Andrew and Christopher
started learning how to cook.  Just to make life a little
more interesting (and provide Bob with some extra
suturing practice) Andrew cut himself rather severely
on a can lid.

How is that possible?  Well, apparently it wasn't too
difficult.  He did a really good job :{

Nice repair job!
Four neat stitches he got to keep for ten days :)

An Orderly Friendship

It's important to have friends in good order, but what
order should it be?

Age order...

...or height order?

I think the height order looks neater :)

Or perhaps you'd prefer music order...

…or round robin ping-pong order.

Final 2014 Project

Well, we managed to eek one last project in under the wire.
Kristin's long awaited writing desk project was finished
at about 10:00 last night.

All the wood was sanded and refinished

New velvet was added to the interior writing service

Chalkboard paint was applied to the interior
storage compartments

The lock was polished with a wire wheel and

and… Ta-dah! All finished.
