The Snow Post

We had some friends visit recently and snow was
the main attraction:

Sometimes you have
organized chaos

Sometimes you just look cute

Sometimes you face the wrong way on a tube ride
and have to go inside to warm up

Sometimes you have a mechanical failure and have to do a little repair

Sometimes you just have to start a snowball fight

Sometimes you have fun chatting in the snow

Sometimes you're just plain happy!

Sometimes big brother gives little brother a ride and sometimes "big" brother gives older sister a ride

Sometimes you make your own sledding hill

Sometimes snowmobilers race saucer riders

Sometimes a really great big brother gives a bunch of little girls rides…and sometimes you fall off--a lot

Sometimes God blesses you with more snow even
while you're still enjoying the last batch and...

Sometimes you can all get together in one place so you can remember how much fun you had together!

More Christmas Goodies

Oh my were we spoiled on Christmas!

Emily decorated this wonderful cake on Christmas Eve
to be ready for Christmas day...

...and with Kristin's help made these doughnuts
to be ready to breakfast.  Yum!

Christmas Cookies with Little Helpers

On Christmas Day Emily had some little helpers to assist
with the dessert cookies.

Little sister got a boost from her daddy while waiting
for her turn.

Now little sister got a turn...

Helena patiently waited to do some of her own.

This is our 20th year to use this cookie stamp for Christmas.
It has survived many moves and many helpers :)

Last Minute Christmas Prep

We had some fun decorating our
"12 Days of Christmas" tree yesterday.

Christopher was especially excited about his
ornament.  Then we noticed...

...this guy trying to get in too.

With the warm temperatures we're having, he's finding
out what happens to snow when it gets warm :)

It's Beginning to Look a lot Like Christmas...

...and a lot more like the U.P.
We had lost much of our snow do to some warm
temperatures so this should brighten up some of the dingy
white.

Heavy snow was predicted for this morning.
They were right!

A view toward the road...this will give Matthew
something to do in his spare time :)

Anyone want to swing?
I'm told my pictures are lousy and don't show
the flakes adequately, but it's the best I can do.

Just imagine lots and lots of flakes--that should help :)

An Awful Sight

Our neighbors need prayer tonight.
Just as Kristin was heading to bed, she saw a fire
at our neighbor's property.

They lost many out-buildings and, most painfully,
all of their 4-H animals.

It is a very dangerous fire, but providentially the winds
are carrying the flames away from their home.
Also, no one in the family was injured.

Our Sunday Afternoon

Sunday afternoon was the first rehearsal for a concerto recording Emily and Kristin will be doing in about three weeks.

They gave their audience an explanation of the piece before they played.  During the piece, the girls hummed the orchestral interludes when necessary.  It made for a fun performance, and I think everyone enjoyed it.

Meanwhile...

Some people have heard this concerto so many times,
we let them work on assembling a new nativity scene
while the girls played.

Sometimes, it's difficult to get a normal picture taken.  We have a few too many hams in the family.

A Glittery Morning

Yesterday morning we woke to a glittery layer of heavy
frost on all the trees.  It had been a beautiful starry night
which meant some pretty cold temperatures.

It was -1˚ when we got up, but it was worth it to see
the beauty.  I'm not sure those who were outside share
my opinion, but ☺.

Sometimes You Need a Nap

James was feeling a little under the weather so I
asked him if wanted to read in his room with a
blanket to cover him up.

A few minutes later, this is what I found.

Studious Matthew

Yesterday, Matthew gave an oral presentation for
his anatomy class.

He looks quite studious, don't you think?

Happy Birthday to Grandma!

Yesterday, we celebrated Grandma's birthday
at dinner time.  The girls made a delicious
lasagna and this luscious chocolate cake.
(I hope to post the recipe soon.)

Happy 87th birthday!
Hope you had a wonderful day!

Christmas Recital Pictures

Yesterday was the Christmas recital.
James was first since he is the least experienced player.
First, he played "Twinkle A" on his cello and did a great job
watching his "driving" :)

Then he played a piano duet with Kristin.

Next from our family was Helena.  She played a piano solo and a flute duet with big sister Emily who also happens to be her teacher.  She was really nervous to play her flute, but she did a great job.  She has a little bitty flute with a great big tone :)

The last one in our family was Benjamin.

He was pretty nervous too, but he played really well.
Great job everyone!  Dad and I enjoyed listening.

Recital Practice

Emily and Helena are playing a duet for the recital
on Saturday.  They got to have a little practice session
with...

...brothers nearby.  This always makes things
interesting :)

Making an Edible Snowman

The edible snowman usually goes to the
birthday person as their special treat.

To make, you simply thicken your frosting
recipe with powdered sugar until it is the
consistency of play dough.

Roll three balls and stack.
Ta dah!

Add match stick carrots for the nose and arms.

Sugar sprinkles for the eyes

We use this kind by India Tree since
it doesn't have food dye.

He looks a little bare without a hat.

Now with a hat made of a carrot chip and
a black olive.

Use a spatula or knife to transfer to your cake.
This eliminates the possibility of squashing his tummy :)
