Surprise! More Snow Pics

What a shocker!  We're out in the snow again.  It's
just what we do here :)
Benjamin decided he'd climb up on this snow structure.
Looks easy until you find out it's pretty much become
a ball of ice!  Rather slippery....

Easy does it...but oh dear look what's coming.

Almost up....

Got it!

Oh dear!  Bad idea!

He didn't last long getting pelted up there.

No Dairy....No Problem

I will admit that years ago our family went into the
"no dairy" diet kicking and screaming. (quietly)
When you know you need to do this and you have
no substitutes it seems like you won't be able to
have anything "good" again.  Many years later it doesn't
really bother me at all--because we aren't missing out
on anything!

Friday night's treat was fudge courtesy of Emily!

Oh my was it good!

One more photo just because it was so delicious!
I'll just add that it didn't last long... :)
If anyone wants the recipe, just message and I'll post it.

Helena's First Flute Solo

Helena has recently started learning flute from Emily.
She is using a special little flute that is made for little
hands and little people.

This was quite an accomplishment for someone in
only a couple of weeks.  Yeah, Helena!
I have to admit, though, there was a first attempt that
didn't go as well...

I thought it was pretty funny.

Candid James

I recently found James busy before bed.
Everyone else was in the family room except him
which I thought was odd.  So....I went hunting.

I found him in his room doing a dot-to-dot just as
happy as could be.  (except that I bothered him by taking
his picture)

Pre-concert Picture

This is a pre-concert publicity pic for a trio
the girls are performing next week.

They will be playing one movement of a Bruch
trio for piano, clarinet, and cello.  It is
just beautiful!

Reading and Lessons

Matthew and James did some reading together.
Quite a variation in choices.

Matthew is reading his Bible.
James is reading TinTin.

Next Christopher decided it was time for James to
have some bass lessons.

First came bowing.

Then pizzicato

Now he's all on his own.
It does seem to be a little big...

Physics Experiment

I really don't like to waste.  I especially
don't like to waste food.  So...when
Jonathan needed to do an experiment
involving eggs, I thought he could just
use the broken eggs for a snack.

That was before one of them landed on
the floor!  Oh well, thankfully both of
them didn't end up on the floor.  It just
meant a gooey clean-up for him and a
smaller snack.

Tractor Repair

Believe it or not, our tractor with the snow attachment
is kind of a must around here.  It saves the guys so much
time and allows the job to be done in about twenty
minutes as opposed to an hour and twenty.

Apparently, it's important to be able to turn the
wheel.  Also, I am told that you can't do anything
but drive forward if the steering mechanism doesn't
work.  Unfortunately, this was the case with our
tractor so some repair was needed.

Who knew you needed teeth on the gear for it to work.
I do now!

Of course, now that it is fixed we haven't had snow
in days, but that's okay :)

Sunday Evening Treats

We usually have the same meal on Sunday evenings.
It consists of things that no one has to spend a lot of
time doing and that are easy.  Even the "littles" can help.
Emily is especially quick with her part :)

These little cookies are a also a great way to use up
the egg whites we have left over from making
mayonnaise.  I really don't like waste :)

Yes, I Had a Birthday Too

Well, I had a birthday this past week, and while I'm not
"older than dirt" as they say, my cake did have a
garden theme.

The flavor of choice was chocolate orange chiffon.

It's beginning to take shape with a "flower pot" in
the middle.  It is filled with frosting and chocolate
"dirt" shavings.  Yum!

Vines

Here come the flowers.

Emily was having fun being creative.

Now, that was a beautiful cake!

I might have been just a little tired.  Eeek! I look awful...

Apparently I wasn't the only one who was tired.

This is a picture of how lovely it turned out.
The marble look isn't just pretty; it mixes the orange
and chocolate flavors.  Yum!

I'm wishing we had more of this somewhere :(

A Little Collaboration

We can't always find music to suit the instrumentation
we need for our family so...

...we end up doing our own custom arrangements.
This sounds like a great idea, but it is very time
consuming.  Once we agree on what sounds good
and who is going to play which part...

...someone has to write it out.  Nobody likes to do this.
So far, Kristin and Matthew have had the pleasure :)

Snow...It's What We Do!

Playing in the snow again for a change.

This time it was Jonathan and Matthew vs.
Andrew, Christopher, and Benjamin.

Jonathan kept them distracted while Matthew
came around from behind.

The battle ensued with Helena hiding below and
me leaving to protect the camera.

Victory!

Jonathan had a major accomplishment this past
week.  He completed PreCalculus!

The victory leap!
I feet like I should have had one too,
but I refrained.  I have to maintain
at least some dignity, or at least hold
still enough to take his picture.

The Mahogany Chair

So...I knew I was going to be gone and wanted to make
sure we got some pictures of this important event.  Our new
camera is a little more complicated than the old one so I
showed Emily how to use it.

You might wonder what the important event was.  Well,
the "mahogany chair" was about to start coming back to life!
James and Andrew got in on this important occasion too.

This chair holds a humorous place in our family's history.
It was left here by the previous homeowner when we moved
in.  I wanted to replace the cushion and paint it so the big guys
could have a chair in their room.  Veto that!  This chair is made
of mahogany and if you're a woodworker you know that you
just do not paint mahogany.  So...I replaced the cushion and I
patiently waited.  (usually)  And waited.  And waited some
more.  Since we moved here over four years ago, it has
taken on quite a special status in our home.

So...now the mahogany chair begins its reassembly.

As you can tell, Andrew was thrilled with his job of
getting out the clamps for the glueing.  Oh, yes, and with
his sister taking his picture.
So, the chair back is glued.  I'm not sure what comes next,
but I'll post that on the next project day.

Learning the Ropes (strings)

Kristin has been patiently teaching James
the names of the strings this past week.

His lesson always takes a little longer than planned
since he has to keep stopping to hug his little cello.

Apparently he's been eager to do this for a while :)
