This Year's Fall Harvest

It's so easy to get discouraged when the year's harvest looks like this but... year will bring a new garden and we will enjoy our pepper, tomato and pumpkin!

The Great Turkey Face-off

Remember how good-natured our turkeys have been?
Not anymore.

These days a turkey trot turns into a turkey face-off and a turkey
fight if the guys aren't careful.  They used to be able to simply
separate them by picking one up and moving it.

Not a good idea anymore--that is if you don't want to get pecked or scratched!
You'll notice Andrew has a much more effective pole :)

Getting to the Symphony Concert--On Time?

I know some people have the misguided impression that we never have trouble getting
to an event on time.  Well...

Helena hastens to the van

Emily is feeling good to be one of the first ones out

Benjamin is never concerned

Jonathan is pleased...

...that is until I sent him back for all of his things.

You can do it ,Christopher.  Tote that bass!

Hurry up, Matthew!

Kristin is thrilled that we're running a few minutes behind-- again.

How does this stuff all fit in here?

You'll notice my forced smile.  It could have something
to do with the fact that we should be exiting the driveway.

...and we're off!

Good thing!  The concert began a bit Early!!

The youth orchestra was featured after the intermission...

...with yours truly conducting.

Whew!  They played great and I am so relieved.

So Many Fun Things...

Lest anyone think all we did together was music, I went around and took pictures of all the different activities going on at the same time.

Matthew and some of the guys did some flying

Jonathan put the window in his shed

An impromptu game of volleyball

Quiet games with the girls

And then they were gone.  We had some very sad people.
Thankfully we had lots to do that day so most of them didn't have much
time to dwell on it.  What a fun time!!!

What Do You Do When....

friends come to visit.  Lots of friends!
First, you make food!

Pancakes for 23!!
Then, you get together to practice...for a concert.

First rehearsal pictures.
Then you have fun feasting together.

What a blessing to have good friends to share fun times.
To be continued...

The Completed Entry

Okay, so probably our least favorite part of tiling jobs has always been the grouting.
Messy, tedious, hard on the knees, etc.

The blessing here is the small area.

Last touch-up

Yea!  Entry complete!

Oh, What a Day!

This morning, James told me he "needed help" to do his assignment.  After I suggested that he just start by putting the circles on, he was suddenly able to do it all by himself.  He was so happy.

We had a turkey injury today.  Providentially Andrew and I discovered it when I gave him a "treat" to take out to his friends.  I've said before that we may have gone a little too far trying to socialize them so they wouldn't be difficult to handle when they were big, but now I know we have.  Well, we couldn't put the injured turkey back in the enclosure so I had different guys take turns watching it till the bleeding had stopped.  Once that was better we tried to leave it out there by itself, right near its buddies.  This was a complete disaster as even when we tried sneaking back to the house, it would realize it no longer had a human companion and would come running back to the house yelling as only a turkey can!  Oh, brother!!!!!

When Christopher was not babysitting "turkey", he was teaching James to ride his bicycle.
Obviously, he was a good teacher.

There was also enough dry weather today for Jonathan
to start putting the finish on the cedar siding for his project.

I will narrate possible captions:

Jonathan thinking to himself..."Wow, this is really great stuff!  I wish I could do this all day!!!"

Actual caption:
"This is the worst stuff I've ever used!!!  It's like water,
it's making a huge mess, and dripping all down the sides."

Possible caption:
"Ah, I'm almost done with this side.  I wish I could keep going."

Actual caption:
"Oh good, almost done.  I'm starving!"

Possible caption:
"It's okay that it has started sprinkling.  I'm sure that won't cause any problems."

Actual caption:
"Ahhhh, well hopefully it will stop soon so I can redo this windowsill!"

Big News!!!!

The siding is now complete on Jonathan's senior project!!!!!!!

the next to last piece

the last infamous triangle

installation and...

So, what's next?  Door painting, window installation, and clear finish on the cedar.
None of this is a moment too soon either.  We had a good frost last night and it was down to 30˚F.

One More Board and a Little Produce

With school having started, Jonathan can only snatch
a few moments here and there to work on the shed.

This afternoon there was time for one more board.

With all the cool weather and significant rainfall, our garden
production has been very low this year.  This is our first ripening
tomato.  Usually we would have been canning them by now
because we'd have more than we could eat.

Also, our only apple (from our tree) is on the right.  It is there next
to a store-bought apple for size comparison.  It is about 1 1/2 inches in diameter.
I'm not sure how we'll split that eleven ways, but somehow...
